April Caddis
We ventured out between storms to fish a few local spots here in northern Utah. The BWO's were coming off fairly well and we caught a few fish just fishing stonefly nymphs. As the afternoon progressed we noticed caddis coming off like crazy. No more BWO's to see as it seemed the caddis choked them out. Of course I was euro nymphing and did not have a dry fly in my box. So I switched to a caddis nymph and little emerger but it pained me to watch fish rising and not throw a dry fly at them. We caught several fish on nymphs though. The caddis were small and dark grey in color, the trout were definitely keyed in on them as they kept rising throughout the afternoon.
It's time to hit the river! If you haven't been out yet this year, this week is starting off to be a good one weather wise. You'll see BWO's coming off on our local water here in Utah and you can catch some caddis action as well. Look for their little tent winged bodies crawling around the brush along the river. Then look for rising fish and target them with dries. If you are nymphing, stonefly nymphs are a great option right now along with caddis and san juan worms. Get them down along the bottom and don't be afraid to set on any bumps your feel or moves that indicator makes.
